Dear friends and esteemed colleagues,

I woke up Friday morning and thought I just can't face another day of madness, watching the terror of the war on Lebanon being inflicted on innocent civilians, for an entire MONTH now. We have never before witnessed this kind of war, where the civilian population of a country is bombed to death to resolve an old grudge between two OTHER countries, (mainly Israel and Palestine).

I turned on CNN to see if a wise person had finally intercepted and pounded some sense into the players, but alas I heard more old and stale rhetoric from Ehud Olmert, who was chanting the same old slogans "Israel will not accept cease-fire" and "Israel will expand it's offensive". I was simply disgusted!

I turned off the TV and turned on my computer. I wrote the below letter to President Bush, and went to work. Exactly one hour later, I turned on the TV at work to watch the news while I sipped my coffee. I saw Ehud Olmert on TV again, but this time he was announcing that he was accepting the cease-fire.
It was only an hour earlier that he had said, "nyet" !!!!

Do you think that my letter helped persuade president Bush to finally make a call to Ehud Olmert and tell him to "Accept" and then called Kofi Annan and said "go ahead and draft a cease-fire agreement"?

None of us will ever know for sure, but I do think the sound of my sentiment was strong enough to drive some sense into George Bush, who is supposedly my representative in the world arena.

Who says common sense isn't a value able commodity?

I used common sense and demanded my rights as a U.S. citizen. I exercised that right under the constitutional law of the United States, and ALL of you can do the same to put pressure on our leaders to work on stabilizing the Mid-East Region. The life you save maybe your own.

I am just sorry that some of the so-called "Christian ministers" on this e-mail list didn't use common sense, and instead, spent a month sending messages of hate, encouraging the violent sentiments of some of the players, and fueling the hatred between Muslims, Jews, and Christians around the world, to benefit themselves and to attain prominence.

I was born a Christian, I am well-versed in Christianity, and YOU sir, Reverend Kenneth Joseph, ARE NO CHRISTIAN!

Please friends, copy and paste the below "talking points" and send it to the president of the United States and your congressional representatives.
Let us support this cease fire and save innocent lives.

Yours,

Ann Yonan

Dear President Bush,

As a United States citizen, I demand that my country stop the violent Israeli attacks against the innocent Lebanese civilians and find a resolution to the dangerous situation in the Middle East.

1. The Israeli attacks constitute collective punishment of the entire Gazan and Lebanese populations, and have created a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented proportions in Gaza.
2. Israel’s own leadership has admitted that the operations in both Gaza and Lebanon have virtually no hope of freeing the Israeli soldiers or stopping rocket attacks.
3. Gaza must not be forgotten while attention is being diverted to Lebanon.
4. Hizbullah’s attack on the Israeli army and its subsequent missile attacks on Israeli cities are also violations of international law. These need to be condemned, but they do not justify Israel’s subsequent actions.
5. Israel's assault on Gaza does not constitute a re-occupation, because Israel's occupation of Gaza never ended.
6. The ongoing crisis reflects the failure of Israeli unilateralism, the failure of the "Roadmap," the failure of the U.S.-orchestrated exclusion of the UN, and failure of the international community and the UN to intervene.
7. The Gaza escalation demonstrates once again the need for an entirely new, international (not U.S.-sponsored) diplomatic process based on international law and human rights, aimed at ending the occupation and establishing equal rights for all, the only basis for a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in the region.

We have the right as US citizens to demand our leaders settle the Palestinian question once and for all so that peace may prevail in the Middle East. Our US policies in the Middle East are creating more and more resistance from Muslim extremists and fundamentalists, who are now threatening our safety in the United States.

It is in our best interest to resolve the Palestinian/Israeli conflict so that it may be just to all Israelis and Palestinians, and in the process reduce the chances of the US being a target for terrorist actions.

We demand you act immediately in the name of all innocent citizens of the United States who have just as much at stake as the Israelis and Palestinians.

Respectfully,

Ann Yonan
