When I was a young girl, I had to go to church every Sunday with my parents. During the sermon, all I would hear was MONEY. "Give money", "we need more money", "our money is short this year", "god will love you if you give more money", and best of all, "those who contribute a lot of money to the church will surely get to heaven much easier". And of course people would give like crazy! While sitting in church, I would look around and see very nicely dressed Assyrian men and women gossiping about others WHILE in church. After the service, I would hear them carrying on those same gossipy conversations, but this time louder, because they no longer had to whisper. "Look at that "bitch"" one would say, "and look at what she's wearing". "You see that ugly woman?", another one would say, "she's a whore that's why she's likable". While walking to their cars, a beggar would ask for money and they would cuss him out and walk right past him. These men and women, their minister, their elders, never did a charitable thing, EVER! They did not feed the hungry, they did not clothe the needy, they did not shelter the homeless. No one ever knew how much money the church had because the minister controlled EVERYTHING. He had a free home to live in, a monthly salary, insurance for the whole family, and a string of buildings he owned. I would have many questions about the church, the congregation, that no one could answer, because they just COULDN'T. They were like sheep, coming and performing a ritual every Sunday. For me, the the most terrifying part of these Sunday rituals was the hymns they would sing in church. And the most terrifying of these hymns was the song below, which gave me the creeps, because I would picture the bloody crusades, and all the death and destruction these Christians caused to the world in the name of Jesus: Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before. Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe; Forward into battle see His banners go! Refrain Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before. At the sign of triumph Satan’s host doth flee; On then, Christian soldiers, on to victory! Hell’s foundations quiver at the shout of praise; Brothers lift your voices, loud your anthems raise. Refrain Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before. Like a mighty army moves the church of God; Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod. We are not divided, all one body we, One in hope and doctrine, one in charity. Refrain Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before. What the saints established that I hold for true. What the saints believèd, that I believe too. Long as earth endureth, men the faith will hold, Kingdoms, nations, empires, in destruction rolled. Refrain Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before. Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane, But the church of Jesus constant will remain. Gates of hell can never gainst that church prevail; We have Christ’s own promise, and that cannot fail. Refrain Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before. Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng, Blend with ours your voices in the triumph song. Glory, laud and honor unto Christ the King, This through countless ages men and angels sing. Refrain Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before. WOULD CHRIST EVER WANT SOMEONE TO BE KILLED IN HIS NAME? --------------------- |
