...on a sunny day. Why? Why not drop the shit...can the bullshit and get real for a change? I`ve been asking everyone I knew what the "message" of Jesus is...why is it such a big deal etc...so far no Christian has been able to answer it. Paul Yonan said it was something to do with self-sacrifice..but that`s pious rot. There are a million examples of self-sacrifice well before Jesus came along...and mind you, these selfless acts were all peformed by humans who didn`t have the advantage of being gods-in-secret who would bounce back up clean and whole from their ordeal..and go off and live on a cloud. No...self-sacrifice is hardly something new Jesus invented or refined. It can`t be love either because that was alive and well in BetNahrain, Egypt, North and South America and everywhere else. Parents didn`t bash their children`s head in before Jesus came along...children honored their parents and were loved and treasured in return. Not even the bit about going high up on a cloud to live forever is new with Jesus...the ancient Assyrians had their Sheol...the Egyptians had a world on the other side of this one..the Greeks had their Elysian Fields where the good would go and their Hades for the rest of us. It`s interesting to note that for all their palaver and chest thumping, Christians have no idea what makes Jesus a big deal. But a pagan might know. Will Durant, who isn`t exactly a pagan though he wouldn`t have been offended to have ben called one, says that the example of Christ is denial of the Will. The Will to reproduce, the Will even to live...maybe especially the Will to live. Jesus wasn`t a wet noodle by any means...he sure as hell had a lot of Will AND nerve when he took on the Roman Empire...but in other things he practiced self-denial. True, he only managed to glorify himself in the process...but he kept himself from reacting or even acting as what we would call a normal person would. For instance, had he had a will to live he would have made his obesiance to the Emperor and gone on his merry way...but he wouldn`t. When he faced execution and his partizans wanted to free him, he refused. He refused sex and marriage and a family..the love of a woman..or man. Jesus was about DENIAL...about erasing the Self...the ACTUAL self, the flesh and blood one, in favor of some rarefied thing no one ever saw. But even here Jesus and his religion were nothing new. No one practises self-denial better or has been doing it for longer, than the Buddhists. Wiping out the Self..the grasping, seeking, covetous, insistant Self is ALL their religion is about. Among the Indians you have both great achievement and wealth as well as poverty and denial and self abasement...but the Indians COULD do things..they had quite the WILL when they wanted...whereas them hairy Hebrews never COULD get a thing right...the Christian offshoot of their religion is more like Sour Grapes than anything else...they looked around at their neighbors and saw that they were woefully untalented by comparison..where there were Pharoahs and Kings and Emperors in Greece and Rome and Assyria and Babylon...the best they could manage was a brigand chief, a highway robber, extortionist, betrayer of women and his best friends...a thug named David whom they have managed to puff up until people are PROUD to say this arch criminal is an exalted relative of Jesus. While there isn`t anything new or particularly impressive in Christianity, that is if you can escape alive from your childhood...it certainly has managed to get a stranglehold on people`s imaginations. Like for instance...look at us...us so-called Assyrians. Now there isn`t anything more foreign to everything we know of Assyrians than Christianity...and no, that does NOT mean the ancient Assyrians didn`t know love or kindness of generosity or self-sacrfice. It means we had NOTHING to do with denial of the Will. If anything ancient Bet Nahrain was an EMBODIMENT of the Will...the Will to make, to have, to build, to transform...to look out over the landscape and IMAGINE what could be...and then go out and BUILD it! The Greeks had that too...as did the Persians, the Egyptians, the Romans...the Brits, the Americans etc. That`s what makes modern Assyrians such crybabies. Deep inside of them there may be a vestige, a hint...a faint whisper, of their ancestors...but their Christianity has taught them to DENY it in favor of this something new...this denial of the Will. But it doesn`t sit well with them...for when it comes right down to it and they are there at the foot of the cross with Jesus, they quickly pull out a Deed of Land and start demanding things...HERE on earth! That`s the reason they`re so damn impotant, because they aren`t at peace with their CORE...the reason they`re in America YELLING at people to save them...or yelling at their own people, stuck in Iraq, to do this or that...where they can do nothing but write on forums..and even THOSE have to be kept hermetically sealed least they all die of fright. Christianity is a strait-jacket imposed OVER what might be a vestige of the ancient WILL that was the center and cornerstone of what being Assyrian meant. --------------------- |
