Strike force to probe cafe shootings By Adam Gartrell 01nov05 A REFUGEE from Iraq is dead and two other men were critically wounded when a series of violent incidents culminated in a shooting attack on a Sydney cafe. Police today set up a special strike force and appealed for help from Sydney's Assyrian community after masked gunmen last night sprayed bullets at the Babylon cafe in suburban Fairfield. A 29-year-old man was killed in the attack by up to three men, at least two of whom used semi-automatic handguns. "We ran away from Iraq so he wouldn't get killed in the war and he got killed here," the dead man's sister, Lydia Boza, said on Channel 9. Three other men were wounded – two seriously – when a volley of shots was fired at the cafe about 9.40pm (AEDT). The police taskforce will investigate a string of violent incidents at the cafe in the lead-up to the shooting, including one last Saturday in which shots were fired. Witnesses reported two men wearing balaclavas stepped out of a black Honda and opened fire at the cafe, police said. A third gunman, described as 25-29 years old, about 180cm tall, with a skinny build, was seen leaving a silver car in a nearby lane and also fired shots at the cafe. The shooting left two 48-year-old men in a critical condition in an undisclosed hospital, while a 19-year-old man who sustained minor injuries was released from hospital and was assisting police. Forensics and ballistics investigators today pieced together details of the attack on the cafe, located in a small tree-lined pedestrian alley off one of the busiest roads in Fairfield. Detective Superintendent Mark Henney, who heads an investigation into violent crime in Sydney's southwestern suburbs, said the cafe was the scene of an argument earlier in the day before the shooting, during which a gun was produced. Strike Force Mallinson will investigate possible links between that argument and the fatal shooting, and an incident on Saturday when shots were fired into the front of the cafe, shattering the windows. Police have recovered a white Suzuki Vitara involved in Saturday's shooting, Det Supt Henney said. Investigators were also examining whether the same cafe had been shot at on October 23. Det Supt Henney said police were investigating whether the owners of the cafe, or its patrons, were being targeted. He said there was nothing striking in any of the victim's backgrounds which would indicate why they were targeted, but said some of them were of Assyrian descent, from a minority people inhabiting parts of Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iran. "We appeal in particular to members of the Assyrian community to provide information to us about this incident and any others," Det Supt Henney said. "I emphasise that fact that this is a large (Assyrian) community in southwestern Sydney but it's always only a handful who create the violence which draws our attention." One nearby business owner, who did not want to be named, heard both yesterday's argument at the cafe and Saturday's shooting. He said arguments between members of the Assyrian community were common in the area. "It's a real worry, I mean, there were kids around on Saturday," he said. "I read (about the latest shooting) in the paper this morning and I really didn't want to come in to work." --------------------- |
