Brilliant dialogue, B!!! I don't think Becket himself could have done any better. We have to laugh at ourselves. You know, I went to the Assyrian Aid Society website this afternoon, and while I think providing the farmers with running water, seeds, and orchards is very admirable, not to mention the clinic & access to healthcare- though one wonders just how accessible these are and to what extent the benefits aid the folk- I couldn't help but ask myself why the Aid is donating fruit trees? I don't mean any disrespect by this- and if the families in need want to stay then by all means bring on the fruit trees- but wouldn't building in the middle of nowhere keep the people, "our people", in the middle of nowhere? Is that "helpful"? Is it my imagination, or just pure ignorance on my part, but wouldn't it be better to shoot for something more, to want more, to give skills that would enable the youth to attain more in their lives? Like education, computers, counseling, financial assitance to emigrate, to move closer to some semblance of change? It feels to me- and this is purely my own emotional, uneducated take- that the Aid is enabling oppressive conditions. Again, I would hate to sound like someone for whom no amount of goodwill is enough, judgmental, and critical, but just for discussion's sake: Are the efforts of the Aid misguided and indeed selfish and political? And: Does anyone know what the thoughts/consensus among the recipients of these gifts are/is regarding the help they are being given? Or are they just "too grateful" beyond measure to even dare ask for what they really want and need? --------------------- |
