We wish you a happy holiday, we wish you a happy holiday, we wish you a happy holiday and a happy new year. No, Ho, HO! Does anyone know when Christ was born? Seriously, ever since I came to the United States, I stopped believing in Christmas, anyway. It's all about ringing in the cash registers, BIG sales, shopping till you drop, fighting the crowd in the store and in the parking lot, and disappointment after disappointment. When I was a kid, our family had everything. We were better off than most people in Iraq. We lived in a not so modest house, with servants, cooks, chaufers, nannys, and gardners. But we never got more than a new pair of shoes and a new outfit at Christmas time. Our house smelled of Kadi, Koulecheh, harissa, port, candy, and was full of guests, coming in and out to wish us a merry Christmas. On Christmas day, we ate a big lunch with Turkey and all the fixins, then we went next door to wish our neighbors a merry Christmas, with us kids getting candy and sweets, and our parents drinking port. We then took our neighbors to the next neighbor with us. We did that all day long till the last Assyrian in our area had no room in their house for all the neighbors. After dinner, my dad would invite all the Assyrian families in our neighborhood for a drink at the club house. Someone would play the piano and we would sing Assyrian Christmas songs, play billiards, or listen to Christmas carrols over the PA system by the fire, roasting chestnuts and peanuts. Some years, our house would be the one who ended up housing the crowd, but none of us felt anything but happiness and excitement. None of us were depressed because we had spent too much money. None of us were tired because we had shopped till we dropped. We just woke-up and it was Christmas, with a beautiful tree decorated in our living room while we slept. I would give anything to have that feeling back, and not be stressed-out, depressed, and broke at Christmas! Melly melly! --------------------- |
