Inanna/Ishtars life story, biography, was written on clay tablets, and comes from Somar, Mesopotamia, the land Bena Diqlath Waprath, in todays Iraq, named after the city of Uruk, the city of Gilgamesh, the king who wouldn’t die, who used to torture his people, but in modern days has been hailed a hero because of a epic poem where he and his best friend En.kidu (a creature of Enki) quest for immortality yet lose it to a snake. The Epic of Gilgamesh is taught at many universities including my own. Gilgamesh searching far and wide for immortality, diving into deep waters, and having to go through many sleepless nights with Enkidu by his side, was offered immortality by Inanna/Ishtar, which he declined. She said to him on purpose, for it to be recorded in history, Gilgamesh, be my MAN I’ll be your WOMAN, but since he was also a beautiful goddess, he decline and ran away into the wilderness with his best friend Enkidu. Inanna/Ishtar hymns were sung thousands of years ago, before the symbolic, bad translations from cuneiform text stories of the Old Testament and the Koran, before the myths of Aphrodite, Zeus etc… Inanna/Ishtar was the daughter of the moon couple, Nanna and Ningal, with many brothers and sisters including her TWIN Utu/Shamash, the god who carried out operation deluge, Sun god. In Enki’s world order Utu is called father of the “Great City”. The people of Somar believed that Inanna/Ishtar was directly descended from the ancient fathers and mothers. To the Somarians who were fascinated by the star Inanna/Ishtar was the planet Venus, which lights up before the break of DON. They used to pray all kinds of hymns to her. A very interesting hymn states. “Oh great light, you are the one of all divine power And no god can compete with you….. :) You go from moonlight to star, You go from star to moonlight.” When Innana/Ishtar was young she cared for a special willow tree. In her teens she visited Enki, the god of earth and wisdom who along with the goddess Ninursag is credited with the creation of HUMANKIND. In a drinking contest, she won the powers of civilization from him. He gave her priesthood, he gave her honesty, he gave her the crown. It is interesting to note that Queen Zenobia, queen of Palmyra did indeed once say to the Romans, “you may have the civilization of power, but we have the power of civilization.” Anyway after Inanna/Ishtar fell in love with the shepherd Dumuzi, who she thought she loved because of recognition of a soul through the eyes, but Boy were they ever incompatible. She was sweet as honey, he was eloquent. But Inanna/Ishtar wanted power of heaven and earth. She wore the heavens on her feet like fine sandals. SHE suffered in the underworld, she gained new powers, her innocence and pure spirit still intact, and she returned to earth with power and strength unimaginable. She knew how to defend herself against Gangs of all sorts, and she could be ferocious. :) When she was angry, and if pissed off, she filled the wells of the land with blood and destroyed the mountains. She knew how to do many things beside make fun of weakling men. She used to create and destroy and Boy was she ever good at naming things. Inanna/Ishtar was widely worshiped. Ancient people were not silly enough to make biographies of people who didn’t exist. There are beautiful hymns to her written by the Sumerian priestess Enheduanna, daughter of Sargon of Akkad, a female scribe, who came to honor Inanna/Ishtar above all the other gods of the Sumerian pantheon. Experts from Hymns to Inanna by Enheduanna: “The great-hearted mistress, the impetuous lady, Proud among the Anuna gods and pre-eminent in all lands, The great daughter of Sin, exalted among the Great princes, The magnificent lady who gathers up the divine powers of heaven And rivals great An, is mightiest among the great gods- She makes their verdicts final. The Anuna gods crawl before her august word Whose course she does not let An know; He dares not proceed against her command. She changes her own action, and no one knows how it will occur She makes perfect the great divine powers, She holds a shepherd’s crook, And she is their magnificent pre-eminent one.” Inanna/Ishtar is four thousand years old. She is fearless, strong, loving, resourceful, creative, an adventurous character that can come up with a solution to any tricky situation. Inanna/Ishtars was a blessing to the people of Somar, whom she loved. Her biography is an echo of a language and a people that there could very well be descendants of still today, especially amongst villagers who only marry women of their village, till this century. Inanna/Ishtars power, beauty, magic etc… shine in mirror-image to the women you can see, if you look closely, inside the moon. Inanna’s Lament for Dumuzi having chosen him to take her place in the underworld: I MISS you Dumuzi I miss you I weep for you My love, I weep for you I mourn in the mountains I mourn in the cities I mourn in the deserts and plains Oh my love I miss you. In modern days you may mistake the statue of the Lion for Dumuzi and Dumuzi for the statue of the Lion. --------------------- |
