His homeland was sold by the Hudsons Bay Company to the Dominion of Canada. He tried to lead his people in resisting Canadian Imperialism twice. Second time, he was captured and hung. The policy of the federal government at that time was to clear the land of Aboriginal inhabitants and open the West to European Canadian agricultural settlement. His people, the Metis, were the offspring of Indians and French fur traders and had lived in the Riviere Rouge area for generations. He was another Ghandi, but not much is ever heard of him since he was born in a time where authority and culture were solely based on skin colour, race, and religion....he was not a pall of those who wrote history... and what killed this honourable man...Louis Riel... was one of the dangerous elements in the world today too ...Protestant Fundamentalism. --------------------- |
