Jeff, I have a book called The Prohet, which I haven't looked at for 10 years or more, and it is somewhere in my garage, as I remodel my house. This book is written by one of his closest friends and the introduction is written by one of Gibran's sisters. In it, she writes they are "Assyrians". Then goes on to tell the story of how during the Byzantine slaughter of the christian Assyrians, Mar Maron, (saint Maron) frantically began to translate Assyrian scriptures from the Assyrian language to Arabic for fear of persecution. He forced them to speak Arabic so they couldn't be distinguished. They started to call themselves Maronayeh, (Maronites). They lived in remote, mountainous villages of Lebanon, and this isolation helped save their lives, (and it seems in time, wiped out their Assyrian identity.) Recently, some of them have begun to claim their Assyrian roots once more, including some of their own church leadership. --------------------- |
