Jeff, I was born in the mountains of Lebanon, in Zahle... the land of the Phenecians. When I was two years old my parents used to take me to festivals of Marcel Khalife, my fellow communist... http://www.musicoflebanon.com/marcel-page.htm Lebanese people are used to war just like Iraqi's. You can brake our bridges, we will rebuild a greater one, there is no breaking of their spirits. These are Phenecians, builders, warriors ...who made the Americans of New Jersey run away during the invasion of Lebanon by the U.S and then the Lebanese people renamed them New Jirsa! Once I was lost on the beach in Beirut around 1984 or so when Israeli tanks were roaming the shores of Beirut. My parents were looking for me all over the place. I found my way to my uncles car and stood beside it untill they saw me standing there...... I have a lot of Hebrew friends... so don't judge a book by its cover! http://www.musicoflebanon.com/marcel-page.htm "Marcel Khalife (b. 1950, Amchit, Mount Lebanon) is a Lebanese, christian maronite, composer, singer and oud (an Arabic lute) player, considered as a palestinian among the palestinians, a Southerner among the South Lebanese and most commonly an arab musician. From 1970 to 1975, he taught at the conservatory in Beirut. In 1976, he created Al Mayadeen Ensemble and became famous all other the world for songs like Umi (My Mother), Rita w'al-Bundaqiya (Rita and the Rifle) and Jawaz al-Safr (Passport), based on Mahmoud Darwish's poetry. In 1999 he was granted the Palestine Award for Music. In turn, he contributed the financial portion of the award to the National Conservatory of Music at Birzeit University in Palestine. In 2005, Khalife was named UNESCO Artist for peace." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcel_Khalife One ....of my favorite songs by Marcel.... Yah yah yah ya shawari3, Oh oh oh oh streets... Beirut el harb el yowmiye. Beirut everyday..daily war... Ya madeeni ya makhsan ham Oh city which holds misery .. Ya hasu ow wahshi jamahiri. Something about its politians being corrupt... Kanu yitbahu feeki namu fe hodnil maraya. They used to ...... Ow glubon sathan 3adike ow inte sit e sabaya. ..................and you are the lady of lady's. Gnub of shmalee, bwareed bet lalee, North and south, guns are firing, We swat 3al 3ale. And the sounds of voices... Ya, ya, ya Beirut... Oh, oh, oh, Beirut... --------------------- |
