...I enjoy translations of our poetry...when they are well done. I have a dancer friend in Seattle who also teaches in Denver and he's choreographed dances to poetry by Rumi...but I have to say certain English words in these translations rub me the wrong way...for all the limitations there are in translating any language into another...especially true for poetry...Fitzgerald's translation of Khyyam stands out as a classic...not because it was literal...and NOT because it was colloqual..or popular...but because it was CLASSIC...because Fitzgerald was a minor poet himself...or at the very least, a master of the English language at its BEST...he caught the ESSENCE of Khyyam in another language without condescending to anyone...I feel that some of the words selected by this translator are done in order to make Rumi "hip" and non-threatening to a hip hop..pop culture generation...in order to "popularize" a fabled mystic and sensualist...(nice combination).

It seems to play DOWN to readers rather than lift them UP to where Rumi is...just a thought.
