Hi Fred, I don't think you get it... We don't have to be the direct descendants of the Assyrians. It is immaterial whether we are or we are not. Armchair nationalists seem to think that it's important because it somehow (in the way that Jews validate their claims on Israel referring to the Jews of the OT) is supposed to bolster their Assyria claims, their unique indigenousness or whatever. There is no purity to be preserved... BUT, there is a language, a culture and ethnicity that is wholly distinct from that of other Iraqis (for Assyrians in Iraq) or Turks (for Assyrians living in Turkey) or Irannians (for those living in Iran) and so on. This is a great example of the heterogeneity of the region and I believe it is worth preserving. It isn't a cultural chauvinism that is worth preserving but the culture in its own right (just as all cultures are worth preserving). I would think that this is something you wouldn't find any problem with because I've never interpreted what you write as pursuing cultural homogeneity in the Middle East. Let me know if I was off the mark in interpreting you. Q pancho wrote: >...I don`t think we get it....NO ONE seriously believes we are any kind of direct descendants of the Assyrians. That`s an impossibillity. How in heaven`s name do you preserve that kind of "purity"....at a crossroads of the world? The ancient Assyrians certainly didn`t bother about mixing their blood...what we really mean, the Christians among us, is that since turning Christian, if we ever did, and ONLY marrying other Christians...even to the point of disowning children who married outside,...we ASSUME that all those who call themselves "Assyrians" in the modern era ONLY married Christians (and to show you how ridiculous this whole thing is...many of us won`t even acknowledge the marriage of a child to any Christian BUT an "Assyrian" one) > >...this is merely to call bigots and racists "Assyrians" just because of their racism and bigoted notions of ethnic or blood purity. > >...But we`re so poor in everything else, no one wants to burst this last bubble of ours. Ishi's predicament was very unique in so many ways. And by the time we are down to the last Assyrian, the world will most definitely take notice. But we will have all the archives of Sargon Dadesho's satellite tv channel and now also the Ishtar TV and all the other community cable shows... Anybody remember the Margoulis' show on Bay Area community tv? It always featured the wife lip-synching to an original song... They were great, don't know what ever happened to them. I don't even recall if I'm naming them correctly. >> >>Perhaps we should breed Assyrians... The Assyrian churches should start a breeding campaign, pressuring Assyrian couples to have a minimum of 4 children... If every Assyrian couple had (at a minimum) 4 children we would exponentially multiple within one generation. But how are we going to get Tyaris to mate with Qochasnayis or (the more daunting task) of any eastern rite assyrian with a chaldean... Oy oy! Mara d'reesha shooreila, I say. --------------------- |
