It's almost impossible to escape your family alive. The power parents have over their children...not just the power of life and death but the power to define an apple...to say what "love" is...what "courage" consists of...makes it almost impossible for any kind of friendship or even real comfort to develop between...it's hard to forget that someone has the power of life and death over you... I had a child when I was 19...left him when he was a year and a half...the following year I took in the children of strangers and did that for three years, then I took my son back and raised him from then on...then I married and raised the child of my wife with her...and then had three more with her...I've tried to step as lightly as I could through their lives...but it's damn hard. I think it's healthier for them if I allow them...maybe push them, to develop their deeper selves away from my meddling...no matter how good or kind my intentions...parents cast too long a shadow over their children...they can whither under it. --------------------- |
