Atheist Quotes As an avid atheist, I've come across many quotes that describe exactly how I feel about religion and God. The following quotes are examples of ideas and beliefs of mine that I could have never possibly worded as proficiently. Many might assume that I have adhered to these thoughts only after reading the quotes but I assure those that these quotes have only assisted in reaffirming what I already believe. Note: the newest additions to this collection are at the top. "The only difference between religion and superstition is the spelling." "A society without religion is like a maniac without a gun." "A lie is at the heart of 'beLIEf.'" "What happens when we're dead? The irony is that all our questions wil be answered after we die. We spend our whole life trying to figure out the truth and the only way we'll find out what it is, is to get hit by a bus. And the only comfort that religion offers is that God is driving that bus." - John Ryman, When Galaxies Collide "To explain the unknown by the known is a logical procedure; to explain the known by the unknown is a form of theological lunacy." - David Brooks, The Necessity of Atheism "When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things." - Paul of Tarsus, I Corinthians 13:11 "Either God wants to abolish evil, and cannot; Or he can, but does not want to; Or he cannot and does not want to. If he wants to, but cannot, he is impotent. If he can, but does not want to, he is wicked. But, if God both can and wants to abolish evil, then how come evil is in the world?" - Epicurus "Pray, v. To ask that the laws of the universe be annulled in behalf of a single petitioner confessedly unworthy." - Ambrose Bierce "We would be 1,500 years ahead if it hadn't been for the church dragging science back by its coattails and burning our best minds at the stake." - Catherine Fahringer "If we are going to teach 'creation science' as an alternative to evolution, then we should also teach the stork theory as an alternative to biological reproduction." - Judith Hayes "Good science should be independent of race, nationality, colour, politics, or religion. There is no such thing as science for Buddhists and science for Baptists. There is no such thing as Jewish science or atheist science. There is only science. Science should be understandable by anyone with the training and knowledge, you shouldn't need to "see the light" or "accept Christ" to be able to understand it." - Steven D'Aprano "Most people would rather die than think; in fact, they do so." - Bertrand Russell "A believer is not a thinker and a thinker is not a believer." - Marian Noel Sherman, M.D. "Faith is often the boast of the man who is too lazy to investigate." - F. M. Knowles "If God cannot be taken literally when He writes of the rising sun, then how can one insist that he be taken literally when writing of the rising of the Son?" - Professor Gerardus Bouw, Baldwin-Wallace College "A believer is a bird in a cage, a freethinker is an eagle parting the clouds with tireless wing." - Robert Ingersoll, Individuality "I have little confidence in any enterprise or business or investment that promises dividends only after the death of the stockholders." - Robert Ingersoll, "A Wooden God" letter to the Chicago Times, March 27, 1890 "Most people can't bear to sit in church for an hour on Sundays. How are they supposed to live somewhere very similar to it for eternity?" - Mark Twain "Geology shows that fossils are of different ages. Paleontology shows a fossil sequence, the list of species represented changes through time. Taxonomy shows biological relationships among species. Evolution is the explanation that threads it all together. Creationism is the practice of squeezing one's eyes shut and wailing 'does not!'" - Dr.Pepper@f241.n103.zl.fidonet.org "If god doesn't like the way I live, let him tell me, not you." "Any belief worth having must survive doubt." "Philosophy is questions that may never be answered. Religion is answers that may never be questioned." - Author Unknown "Religion might be helpful in death, but education is helpful in life." "Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day; give him a religion, and he'll starve to death while praying for a fish." - Author Unknown "Imagine the ego of the human race, to consider themselves so grand, as to warrant a creator worthy of praise." - Robert Brunswick Jr. "It may be that our role on this planet is not to worship God, but to create him." - Arthur C. Clarke "I have never seen the slightest scientific proof of the religious theories of heaven and hell, of future life for individuals, or of a personal God." - Thomas Edison "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect, had intended for us to forgo their use." - Galileo Galilei "Organized religion: The world's largest pyramid scheme." - Bernard Katz "Randomness scares people. Religion is a way to explain randomness." - Fran Lebowitz "Suppose we've chosen the wrong god. Every time we go to church we're just making him madder and madder." - Homer Simpson "I've yet to find anything convincing about the arguments Christians make for the existence of this God chap, and feel, that if he does exist, events such as the Holocaust, Cambodian massacres and Limp Bizkit illuminate the fact that he's been asleep at the wheel for quite some time." - Wil Forbis "The church says the earth is flat, but I know that it is round, for I have seen the shadow on the moon, and I have more faith in a shadow than in the church." - Ferdinand Magellan "I respect faith, but doubt is what gets you an education." - Wilson Mizner "Faith: not wanting to know what is true." - Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche "One might be asked "How can you prove that a god does not exist?" One can only reply that it is scarcely necessary to disprove what has never been proved." - David A. Spitz "I cannot believe in a God who wants to be praised all the time." - Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche "Atheism is a requirement for a complete human being. Religion is a crutch that is shackled to you, one you never really needed in the first place, but were convinced by others that you couldn't live without. Once you discover it's only an illusion, that it's not even a real crutch, you discard it gladly." - Brent Yaciw "I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other gods you will understand why I dismiss yours." - Stephen F. Roberts "We must question the story logic of having an all-knowing, all-powerful God, who creates faulty humans, and then blames them for his own mistakes." - Gene Roddenberry "The only difference between a cult and a religion is the amount of real estate they own." - Frank Zappa "It is an interesting and demonstrable fact, that all children are atheists and were religion not inculcated into their minds, they would remain so." - Ernestine Rose "The idea that God is an oversized white male with a flowing beard who sits in the sky and tallies the fall of every sparrow is ludicrous. But if by 'God' one means the set of physical laws that govern the universe, then clearly there is such a God. This God is emotionally unsatisfying... it does not make much sense to pray to the law of gravity." - Carl Sagan "It is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring." - Carl Sagan "I would love to believe that when I die I will live again, that some thinking, feeling, remembering part of me will continue. But as much as I want to believe that, and despite the ancient and worldwide cultural traditions that assert an afterlife, I know of nothing to suggest that it is more than wishful thinking." - Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World "The world is so exquisite, with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there's little good evidence. Far better, it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look Death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides." - Carl Sagan, Billions and Billions "God made me an atheist. Who are you to question his wisdom?" "For most of human history we have searched for our place in the cosmos. Who are we? What are we? We find that we inhabit an insignificant planet of a hum-drum star lost in a galaxy tucked away in some forgotten corner of a universe in which there are far more galaxys than people. We make our world significant by the courage of our questions, and by the depth of our answers." - Carl Sagan "The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality." - Albert Einstein "Only the fool says in his heart: There is no god -- The wise says it to the world." "Religion is excellent stuff for keeping common people quiet." - Napoleon Bonaparte "Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful." - Seneca the Younger "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" - Carl Sagan "To believe that consciousness can survive the wreck of the brain is like believing that 70 mph can survive the wreck of the car." - Frank Zindler "My spell-checker lacks the word 'creationism' in its dictionary, so each time that word is encountered, an alternative pops up at the bottom of my screen, 'cretinism'" - E.T. Babinski "Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear." - Thomas Jefferson, Letter to Peter Carr, Aug. 10, 1787 "Our ignorance is God; what we know is science." - Robert Ingersoll "This is my religion . . . joy and exaltation in my own existence... so go ahead and snarl... bite... howl, you Calvinistic divines and all you who say I am no Christian. I say you are not Christian." - John Adams "The foolish reject what they see and not what they think; the wise reject what they think and not what they see." - Huang Po "A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death." - Albert Einstein "There once was a time when all people believed in God and the church ruled. This time was called the Dark Ages." - Richard Lederer, Anguished English "An atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church. An Atheist believes that deed must be done instead of a prayer said. An Atheist strives for involvement in life and not escape into death. He wants disease conquered, poverty vanished, war eliminated." - Madalyn Murray O'Hair "If Jesus had been killed 20 years ago, Catholic school children would be wearing little Electric Chairs around their necks instead of crosses" - Lenny Bruce "The contemplation of this world beckoned as a liberation (...)The road to this paradise was not as comfortable and alluring as the road to the religious paradise; but it has shown itself reliable, and I have never regretted having chosen it." - Albert Einstein, Autobiographical Notes "Two hands working can do more than a thousand clasped in prayer." Drop Christianity." Bumper sticker seen: "Geez if you believe in Honkus." "Out of convicted rapists, 57% admitted to reading pornography. 95% admitted to reading the Bible." "Theists think all gods but theirs are false. Atheists simply don't make an exception for the last one." "If atheism is a religion, then bald is a hair color." - Mark Schnitzius "Fundamentalism means never having to say 'I'm wrong.'" "Man created God in his own image." --------------------- |
