Thought I would give my two cents about the technology behind general website "hits" vs. "unique hits".

A "unique hit" is registered by the web server as a PAGE REQUEST by a NEW user. A general "hit" is registered by the web server as a PAGE REQUEST by a user who already visited.

The web server knows the difference between the two based on the persons IP address which is logged. Sometimes many visitors have the same IP address and that is because they belong to the same network (i.e. your workplace). This is why IP addresses don't do much to reveal someone's identity. Also, if you noticed, that is you have ever been banned from a forum or some other site. It sometimes, just a matter of restarting your computer in order to change your IP address and lift the ban (sometimes it takes more).

If every user within a network hit the same site, it would only be tracked as one (1) "unique hit" and the rest would be registered as general hits.

My point being that Farid or Jeff or Maggie or anybody CANNOT refresh the homepage of this forum a million times to register a million "unique hits".

I think a lot of people are "closet" Inside Assyria readers.

Jeff, doesn't your provider offer some type of statistical tracking?
