Hi Nayj,

I am very specific with my choice of words on these issues and I was only giving my impression of the conversation that I had with him. If it was about being separatist versus a more "philosophical" point, I would have caught on (that wasn't the case here). I have no problem with saying Assyrians (Chaldeans) may also be Arab, but don't tell me that there is nothing that would distinguish Assyrian/Chaldeans from an Arab, that they are culturally, linguistically, ethnically one and the same. The truth belies such a broad stroke. Accepting that this region is not heterogenous is just the beginning of rising to the potential that the greater ME possesses. But rational minds may disagree on whether adopting one identity versus recognizing the diversity will get us farther. I think the Ba'athists tried to do the former with mixed results while the latter has yet to be tried (the Ottoman millets notwithstanding).

>qasrani, the issue is not what did the Chaldean community 'do to Sinan'...I am guessing he was trying to make a point about how separatist the community is. Chaldeans are just as sectarian as some Muslims who only identify w/ Sunnis or w/ Shiites. It was more a philosophical point and one that seeks to look at identity in more broad terms vs in very parochial terms. I don't know Sinan personally, but I have heard wonderful things about him, and like you, he is close friends w/ two good friends of mine. I am interested in reading a writer like him vs one's who wants to wall us into a small of box of very specific prescribed ideas of who we are, how we should live, w/ whom we can associate, and even how we identify ourselves.
