Why? ....politicians are useless...or rather, they only move when and as the public allows...if we wish to make an impact we should aim at changing the public's perceptions...politicians come and go...by the time you grease their palms and cozy up to them, they're gone and you have to start all over again with the next one..and the next one. The only way you can benefit from one is if you have a short range goal...like an easement so you can build a shopping mall...or some other immediate objective that can be quickly achieved...and for which you can pay the guy off someow...but they are absolutely no good for long range goals...especially if it means spearheading anything.... I always refer back to the Elian Gonzalez case when the Attorney General of the United States, the President and everyone else was unable to take Elian from his relatives in Florida because public opinion was not yet on their side...even though the courts had all ruled that Elian belonged back with his father in Cuba...things were at a standstill...Janet Reno even flew down to meet with his uncles and cousins who refused to hand him over...such a thing has NEVER happened in United States history...when all the politicians on up to the president were afraid to enforce the LAW....and that didn't change until his relatives overplayed their hand...they got used to making cute videos of Elian that were played across the nation...then they released one that showed that THEY were badgering the boy into staying..that he clearly missed his father and wanted to go home, never mind all the gifts being showered on him by a nation only too glad to believe its own bullshit...and THEN public opinion shifted..opinion polls showed many more people believing that this was enough, the circus should end and all those benefitting by keeping the boy a prisoner of OPULANCE should back off...only THEN did the Federal government move in and "rescue" the boy. Public opinion dominates in the United States..politicians run AFTER it...as it must be in a mob democracy...politicians are good for the little stuff...they seldom if never lead on any issue...not unless they lie like a Bush..and then only for awhile and only on the way to the toilet. As for Kanno...I wouldn't vote for someone JUST because he is an Assyrian...given the quality of your basic Assyrian I should think ethnicity, or whatever we are, would be a reason NOT to vote for him...but then I don't vote...I'm waiting for martial law and then I'm joining the underground. --------------------- |
