...look forward to it. We are always on the lookout for Assyrians who don't get their "feelings hurt"...

However, I want to leave you with a question to ponder in the meantime if you'd like. You mentioned that people should be free to go out on their own and decide for themselves if the belief they were raised with is something they still believe in. I did that for myself.

...if I may...you might THINK you have...but I fear me there were areas you didn't dare examine. For instance, I think you would be hard pressed to examine your religious views honestly if it meant you MIGHT reach a conclusion that would cause people you love pain...just a hunch.

...You happen to have been born into a Christian faith...one which you too believe...and since you are a decent enough person you may not have ever been able to free yourself enough to question your parent's core beliefs...or your notions of what an Assyrian is...or what Assyria is...or was...or could be.

...I believe I would have examined any religion I was born into the same way I poked around Christianity...I don't think you can be really free unless you state, ahead of time, that whatever you find, when you go looking, even if it angers or saddens your loved ones terribly, you'll hold onto to it nonetheless...even with your mother or father tearfully wailing outside your door that they've lost their son to the Devil...or irreligion.

...You are a good person...no doubt a good child in your time....unless a person is prepared to tell his parents to go to hell...and his president and priest....he or she cannot come close to risking freedom...intellectual or otherwise.

...I think if you, the same you, had been born Muslim...or to devoted, kind and loving Buddhist parents...or Cannibals...you would have felt a strong "belief" in THAT religion. That's the reason social change is usually initiated by bastards, bitches and sons of bitches...even Jesus told people to leave behind their parents when they prepared to follow him.

...On the famous other hand, I'd like to believe that I would have examined whatever religion or belief system I had been born into..whether Christian, Muslim or Shinto, capitlaist, Fuedal, communist etc. I could care less how "upset" my parents, president OR Maggie might get...Truth is Truth..and the truth of this discussion is that you are NOT one to risk the serious displeasure of those you love and who love you...you are a "good person"...I am a bastard.

So what is it about me believing what I believe that's problematic?

...just this: It is more than evident that these things that you "believe"...whatever they might be...are things you were BORN into...things you could only dare to "examine" slightly...I don't think you are a person who could say ahead of time: "I'm going to look into this all the way, I don't care where it leads". You examined them, really, in order to make them stronger...not honestly risk tossing them all out.

It's not a trick question...I just want to see what it is you mean exactly b/c we're not in close proximity where I can meet you in person and better understand what you're exactly saying.

...actually, we are. I'm here in San Mateo...but you're busy now and I'll be back...

...this is not a trick answer either...Not until you risk coming to the very edge of the cliff...risking the destruction of all that you "believe", the death of the Self you were handed at birth, which is more than likely inauthentic, as for most of us it is... being willing to see your dearest beliefs dashed...can you be said to have really examined who or what you mean by "me"...by, "MY beliefs". I think you merely reaffirmed what you NEEDED to believe anyway...and that's different from what I was talking about. But you're close.
