http://www.gateway2russia.com/st/art_272223.php 14 March 2005 10:00 Russia wants to help solve Lebanon crisis The Hezbollah group should be represented in Lebanese political circles, according to Russian Federation Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He was speaking after talks with Lebanese opposition leader Walid Junblatt today. Its "role ought to be taken into account in the interests of Lebanon and the whole of the Middle East", the Russian minister said. Sergey Lavrov gave an assurance that "Russia can help find a way out of the crisis, as together with the other sides it supports the implementation of Resolution 1559 of the UN Security Council". "It must be strictly implemented in all its points," the Russian foreign minister said. "It is important that in the implementation of the resolution no-one should pursue unrelated goals." According to Lavrov, Russia takes it for granted that Syria's decision to withdraw troops will also involve the latter's security forces. "We examined the latest developments, including Syria's decision to pull out part of its troops from Lebanon and redeploy them in the Al-Biqa Valley," the Russian minister said. "We are agreed that the withdrawal must take place in stages in order to avoid destabilizing the very fragile situation in Lebanon, including the fragile situation in terms of religious denominations." Lavrov voiced the hope that the Lebanese parliamentary elections set for May will pass off in a "free democratic atmosphere without external influence and will allow the people to express their will". "Syria and Lebanon are neighbours and must live in peace and tranquillity," the minister noted. This, in his view, "will be an important element of regional stability". "Russia, as a friend of both Lebanon and Syria, has an interest in this," he said. "We are actively promoting ways to overcome the crisis and believe the situation around it should not be whipped up." Russia, Lavrov said, hopes that it "will be able to help Lebanon to find a way out of the crisis". Moscow "strives to help achieve the goal that Rafiq al-Hariri was seeking", he said. "The former prime minister did much to ensure that developments in Lebanon and the region should proceed along a stable path and strove for the country's worthy life and prosperity." Sergey Lavrov noted that Moscow "values the contribution of the Junblatt family to the development of Russian-Lebanese relations". "The situation in Lebanon, and, in this connection, in Syria is in the forefront of world politics, and we value the chance to discuss the problem and help find a way out of the crisis." Walid Junblatt said, for his part: "Our goal is the stabilization of the situation in the region, good relations with neighbouring countries and above all with Syria. Considerable changes have taken place in the world in recent years: the Berlin wall was destroyed...... ....and Russia became a democratic country..... ....That is why we want to be a free country too...."
