...that's what Shushan makes of his name. This is a review of Aprim's book by Parpola... Dr. Simo Parpola short review of the book This is a very important and much needed book that should have been written long ago. ...it is an important book if you agree with Aprim...if you don't....it's just a book. Parpola never printed his own books...they were published. He neglects to emntion that...since his own important books find publishers...it would seem the same publishers would have taken Simo[s word for it and published this MOST important book. ..Parpola has had his way paid to attend Assyrian conventions...by Norman Solkha...who then proceeded to insult them all...but that's another story. I believe Simo is trying to give a helping hand to someone he feels rather sorry for...Aprim has that effect on people. Simo knows there's no audience for the book outside of Aprim's tribe...and so really, what's the harm? Should Aprim ask Parpola to include his book in the university program, or any program anywhere, I believe he would find out quickly what Parpola really thinks. The author traces the history of the Assyrians from the fall of their Empire to the present day and convincingly demonstrates the unbroken continuity of Assyrian identity through the millennia in the middle of endless persecutions. ...he says nothing about them being all and only Assyrians. Simo Parpola is not about to check Aprim's sources...neither is he going to shoot holes throug the book. It isn't significant enough to be refuted. This dispassionate yet captivating book corrects many misconceptions about the Assyrians, both ancient and modern. ...he's merely returning some favor here. It is hardly dispassionate..it is definitely not captivating, unless you're easily captivated...and it merely carries over old misconceptions. We always do this, let a white man compliment us and we pee in our pants in delight. Aprim has put to writing what HE believes our history is...Parpola isn't going to be the one to rain on his parade. It is a must for every modern Assyrian and Assyriologist, and of considerable interest to the general public as well. ...nice try. Let us know when your University in Helsinki makes it manadatory reading...or even puts it on the reading list...This is very kind of you...you might think. But I take exception...we modern Assyrians may not matter that much to you, so that patting us on the head for this dismal book might be your way of patronizing us...like don't hurt the feelings of the little dears...There are any number of myths about your own culture and religion...I doubt you would be so tickled if I put them together in a book and asked you to praise it. ...Aprim's book should have been submitted for peer review...I fear me that you are just patting the Darkies on the head for a nice effort...and by the way...since Aprim is shilling for Christianity..and feeds your own prejudice to believe the people of Ashur JUMPED into your religion...I can better understand why you find this thing compelling. I personally started reading it from Chapter 10, "The so-called Assyrian cruelty," and couldn’t stop reading. ..since Aprim lifted that from your own books...no wonder you stared there and COULDN'T stop reading...no doubt you recognized several other old books along the way. Was something wrong with the first nine chapters? Simo Parpola Professor of Assyriology University of Helsinki, Finland ...stick to what you know best..and thank you for that. The history of modern Assyrians is not your field...you have been too quick and too pleased to think you see a DIRECT link and progression between Ashur and Christ...no doubt there are Spanish writers who believe Moctezuma was also in direct descent from Christ...after all...aren't all Aztecs Christian today? --------------------- |
