...a Hebrew visited Nineveh and was struck with wonder at all he saw..."but", said he to an Assyrian, "are you not concerned with what happens after you die...where will you go...what will be there to greet you...does nothing lofty and sublime ever cross your mind...what good is all this earthly travail when all ends in death"?

It happened that the Assyrian he adressed was then engaged in supervising the construction of new drainage canal, lined with fired brick, to draw off the waters that swept through the city in winter.

"Would you mind very much stepping aside", said the Assyrian..."we have work to do and no, I don`t think about where I`ll go after I die...my time here is taken up, as you can see, trying to build a better city."

The Hebrew muttered curses under his breath at people so bereft of religious sentiments and returned to Jerusalem, where he quickly took ill due to an infestation of insects breeding in the puddles and ditches in the town square surrounding the Temple. His condition worsened, even though three sheep and four doves were slaughtered in the Temple. As a last attempt to catch yahwe`s notice, the man`s wife took their first born son, all of five years old at the time, to the Temple, where his blood was added to that of the goats and sheep...but to no avail for yahwe must have been testing again.

..if you really believe in heaven...go there...the train leaves on the hour from Jerusalem.
