I just finished my tour of Italy, during which I went on numerous historical and cultural tours. During one of the tours which was called 'Classical Rome' I put my brain into neutral, became a typical Assyrian, and decided to ask the Italian University Professor a pressing question.

I asked him if the indigenous Romans who speak Latin are demanding their country back from the Italians who invaded their land and should be kicked out?

He looked at me dumbfounded and simply stated. What are you talking about? Modern day Italy is a mixture of original Romans from the Roman Empire who have after two thousand years intermixed with the numerous other peoples who settled in Italy.

He also explained that the Italian name and nationalism is a recent name given to the united provinces that were united by Garibaldi during the 19th century.

The Italians not only identify themselves with this modern name but they accept that there ancestors were the Latin speaking Romans making them all indigenous to the Italian homeland. Italy and Rome are synonyms to the modern day Italian.

The poor ignorant sucker I thought. He actually believed what he was saying.
I felt like protesting that I think we Assyrians know a little more than you guys about nationalism, identitiy, culture and history but Asuma interrupted us and the other people on tour wanted to ask questions of their own.
