N.C. schedules executions for three convicted killers Associated Press RALEIGH, N.C. - North Carolina has scheduled executions for three men convicted of killing family members, including a Charlotte man who received Mecklenburg County's first death verdict for killing a spouse. Elias Hanna Syriani, 67, is scheduled to die by injection Nov. 18. He was sentenced to death in 1991 for killing his wife, Teresa Yousef Syriani, just after she filed for divorce in 1990. Syriani stabbed his wife 28 times with a screwdriver while his 10-year-old son tried to stop him. She died nearly a month later. Also scheduled for execution are Steven Van McHone, 35, was sentenced to death March 7, 1991, in Surry County for the deaths of his mother and stepfather and Kenneth Lee Boyd, 57, who was sentenced July 14, 1994, in Rockingham County for the deaths of his wife and father-in-law. In the case of Syriani, appeals attorneys said their client may have abused and later killed his wife because of trauma he experienced as an Assyrian Christian in Jerusalem. Syriani's trial lawyer didn't hire a mental health expert who could have explained the abuse and argued that it had altered his mental state, say his appeals lawyers, who intend to ask Gov. Mike Easley for clemency. McHone was convicted for the June 1990 murders of his mother, Mildred Johnson Adams, and his stepfather, Wesley Dalton Adams Sr., who lived in Siloam. He is scheduled to be executed Nov. 11. He also was convicted of one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury for assaulting Wesley Adams Jr. Boyd, 57, was sentenced for the March 1988 slayings of Julie Curry Boyd and Thomas Dillard Curry. His execution has been scheduled for Dec. 2. Boyd admitted killing his wife, Julie Boyd, and her father, Dillard Curry, in 1988. They died when the inside of Curry's home in Stoneville was riddled with bullets. Kenneth Boyd called rescue workers for help minutes after the shootings, according to a transcript. "I just killed my wife and father-in-law," Kenneth Boyd said. "Come on and get me." Kenneth Boyd told investigators that he and Julie Boyd separated in 1987. He blamed the break up on frequent arguments and his excessive drinking problem. Boyd also said he was angry at his wife but that he didn't plan to kill her or her father. All the executions will be at Central Prison in Raleigh. --------------------- |
