...the recent Spago Mine disaster is a good window into the new "religious" America. As you may recall an explosion trapped 13 miners...families gathered in the one church in the impoverished town and prayed and prayed...mine officials went before the hundreds of cameras at the scene and they too spoke of praying and Jesus...the governor of Virginia came down and HE talked about prayer and Jesus...news anchors talked about the number of citations the mine had received for just the sorts of dangerous neglect that led to the mine explosion...and then they cut to someone talking about Jesus and how prayer works...and the hours dragged on...rescue attempts seemed to have been coordinated by the same horsey guy who rivaled Katrina as a natural disaster...nothing went right...the hours ticked by...oxygen ran out...

Then the good news..or Gospel, if you will...was shouted out...they`d been FOUND...safe and hale and hearty...church bells, well one, tolled...people hugged, the gov said, "this proves prayer works in Virginia"!....commentatots were slightly skeptical of reports that not only were the miners "miraculously" well, but they`d soon appear for a news conference...what? So soon after being trapped underground breathing noxious gasses?

And so the teevee audiences round the world waited to see these walking miracles...testimony to the efficacy of prayer to fix things...though you could have prayed for mine reform all you wanted..but let that go...

And then the shocking news came that ambulance crews, too eager perhaps to see miracles, had misunderstood messages from rescuers...the miners had indeed been found...but found dead..all but one, who was in a coma. The news was not greeted well...all of a sudden you heard no more of Jesus, or prayer....but then Jesus was back ten minutes later,,,,apparently, several distraught family members said, Jesus wanted those men in heaven...near to him...widows smiled through their tears to think of George..up there with Jesus in heaven, no more toiling in a dank, dirty hole on your knees...no more backbreaking labor...nothing but...well, no one knows exactly what`s up there, but it HAS to be better than what we have down here...right?

The fact that several children were left without parents by Jesus, so anxious was he to see 12 miners...or that wives and mothers were bereft of what little economic security they`d had...didn`t bother anyone...they were too busy shedding tears of joy to think of their loved ones...now up there with Jesus.

The mine officials too were very relieved when the talk turned back to Jesus and his mercy...how he loved Bob and George and Sam so much that he just couldn`t bear to see them "suffering" on earth...so, in his mysterious ways that he`s so famous for, he scared the shit out of the miners by setting off an explosion three inches from them, in the dark...then chased them down the narrowing mine shafts...getting rid of their breathable air by stages till finnaly they gasped their way to a horrible death...strangulation ain`t pretty...and Jesus did all this because he LOVED those men and wanted to show it really badly.

The mine oficials were hoping no one would mention that devil of a word, "Lawyers"...so was Bush..so were all neo-cons, who`ve made Lawyers instruments of the Devil. The fact that government regulation has also been made into a tool of the Devil isn`t lost on the mine owners..or the regulators who often retire at much higher pay in the service of the companies they were supposedly regulating.

The Spago Mine was a disaster waiting to happen...

...workers, citizens, have been inundated with preachers posing as politcians and vice versa telling them that government is EVIL..that it interferes with god-given rights of a few to get filthy rich...regulations mean money spent on safety etc....they mean lower returns to investeors and Board Members...the spate of warnings and citations had not been enforced because the government is "poor" and can`t afford enforcement officials...they can barely investigate anything...slaps on the wrist are the most the owners can expect...it`s all part of the neo-con plan to trash the Federal Government...it`s taking place even as we sit, waiting for all the other disasters that will come our way...but that`s what Jesus is for...Jesus is your consolation prize..just as that shadowy heaven no one knows a thing about is...

In this atmosphere it`s almost sacriligious to get a lawyer and SUE the motherfuckers for their greedy negligence...that is not a course Jesus would like...the preachers who work at the company church will tell the children...Jesus wants us to PRAY and have FAITH...so do the mine owners..in fact, the mine owners ARE Jesus.
