...Durant puts it nicely...he says that whereas the pagan Britons used to eat beef after they prayed (meaning animal sacrifice), they now, upon converting to Christ, prayed before eating beef.

If you think about it that`s all animal "sacrifice" was...people thanking the gods for their abundance...the animal, which today we slaughter in an abbatoir and carve up in a butcher shop or a supermarket, was then led to a temple to be slaughterd "for" a god or gods...in thanks for the meal..after which a portion would be given to the temple...a portion burned as an offering..a share or meal for the gods...and the rest taken home and eaten up as kebobs or kipti...now we PAY for these services...back then, the portion of the sacrifice that went to gods and temples was the "payment".

But really...what a mess those temples must have been..and leave us not forget that right up to Jesus, the Hebrews, who believed in ONE god and were therefor not "pagans"...were slaughtering animals in their most holy temple...making the place reek and smell like...well, like an abbatoir.
