Assyrian food and cooking deemed oppressive and drained of nutrients by queer Assyrian diarist. Chicago 2006 Ever wonder why it should take so long to prepare and cook Assyrian food? Most dishes require hours of toil, while others consume days? (Reesh'aqlih) Free the Assyrian housewife/mother!!! She soaks the rice overnight, drains it, cooks it on the stovetop, then places it in the oven and bakes it. She picks grape leaves, cleans and trims them, washes them three, four times, painstakingly fixes the fresh herbs by gathering, rinsing, and maticulously cutting them,to ultimately stuff the leaves, each and every one- sometimes dozens, sometimes hundreds- for a meal that she will serve to thankless fat, stupid, husbands who curse at the television, and vote for Bush, men after whom she will no doubt clean and pick up. Ever notice that most Assyrian dishes lack color and crunch? That most our dishes are cooked until every goddamned vegetable is slushy and robbed of any nutrients? Just one more surreptitious manner by which we are kept hostage by our traditions and unnutritous ways... --------------------- |
