...this monument was created by a contemporary sculptor, here in Mexico. That might account for its overall chilling effect for it comes closer to the truth of how Christianity was "spread" than you`ll ever hear in Church..or even in State.

The child seems to be the object of everyone`s attention...the native, the father figure, is being barred by the priest...who looms over the terrified child, bible in hand...his face hidden...but not his intentions. The soldier is there to make sure the warrior poses no threat to the preist`s overall designs...which are to steal that child`s soul...not save it.

The more typical composition shows natives kneeling in gratitude at the feet of padres and Conquistadores...you can take it that way if you need to...but what they`re really doing is begging...begging for mercy, begging for the return of their children and wives...begging to be able to keep their own way of life...begging to be let alone.

This sculpture could not have been rendered this way 50 years ago...it`s not ambiguous enough..it tells its story too starkly...and that is:The Church and the soldiers who back it up are a menace...they have been since the Romans first saw the way to place a Roman Legion in your head...
