...if the wind held for one more day the Persians would have beaten the Greeks at the battle of Salamis and who knows...all of Europe could have been Muslim.

Had it not been for the Ottomans there might not have been any Renaisance, first in Italy and then blowing away cobwebs all across Europe...When the Turks were beating at the gates of Byzantium, the emperor, can`t remember which thug, sent urgent messages to the Pope asking the help of Western Christianty to hold off the Turks, else, he warned, they might be overcome and THEN the Pope could face all of Islam on his own.

There were fanatics in the West who refused to have anything to do with "wrong" Christians...but the Pope relented and agreed to receive a delegation of a few hundred bishops, or whatever they had in the Byzantine Empire...along with them came scholars, thinkers, writers etc...also with them came Classical Greece...the Byzantines, you see, were Greek to begin with and they had never burned Aristotle or Socrates...or the Greek playwrights etc...in Byzantium they HONORED classical learning while the Pope was busy burning it...and banning and deleting it...ahem.

Well, the Eastern Roman/Greeks came to Italy and they spoke and talked and taught and exposed the darkened minds of the Dark Ages...it was from that initial seed that a hunger to learn more of the Classical past swept through Italy first...making way for DiVinci and Michaelangelo and so many others..and from there it spread everywhere but to Spain, which had to wait till Franco died in the 1970s before they could walk naked and proud of it.

So..thank Islam...thank Muhammad and the Ottoman Turks for they inadvertantly lit the fires of culture where the Western Christians were lighting heretics. That goes for our Christians as well...had the Turks NOT defeated Byzantium...had Muhammad`s armies NOT driven the Byzantines out of Egypt and Syria and BetNahrain, the Byzantines would have killed them all as heretics.

And so finally the Pope refused to help because the Eastern Church refused to trade some treasured bugaboo for another bugaboo...and sure enough the Turks defeated the Byzantines...which forced them to take their heels and take their Greek texts with them and run to the West anyway...and sure enough, the Turks came gunning for the West next and had it not been again for an unfortunate breeze at the battle of Lepanto...the Turkish navy might well have won...and Europe would have flirted with Islam yet again.

ain`t hisotry great?
