..Constantine didn`t have time to force everyone into Christ and the wars the Romans fought afterwards hardly disposed people to accept their new religion, if they had any choice. ..by the time the western empire at Rome was rendered harmless by successive waves of barbarian, non-Christian warriors and migrations, Germany, France, Russia, Poland and the north countries were more readily disposed to turn Christian....that is, their kings forced them into it. This religion was seen and used as the best prop for unity and submission among the people by kings who could never be sure of their thrones or heads...from Durant: "King Harald Bluetooth imposed Christianity upon Denmark(974)as part of the price that Emperor Otto II demanded for peace; Boris of Bulgaria, after flirting with the papacy, went over to the Greek Church(864) to win protection against an expanding Germany, and Vladimir I made Russia Christian(988) to win the hand of Anna, siter of the Greek Emperor Basil II, and to obtain part of the Crimea as her dowry," Yet, if you were to tell all these people today how their grandparents REALLY came to Christianity, they`d ignore you..their eyes would glaze over and they`d repeat about how wonderful Jesus was and their next home, in paradise. I tell you, religion makes you stoopid and prowd to be so! There was nothing "in" Christ to attract hardly anyone. That doesn`t mean he didn`t say a few good things...just that no one was interested..and they STILL aren`t. But they`re ALL glad as hell to be "Christian"...heaven, you see. --------------------- |
