...The Persian Sassanians ruled Iraq as well...which was part of "Persia" back then...here`s Will Durant: "Christianity was already established there when the Sassanians came to power, it was tolerated until it became the official faith of Persia`s immemorial enemies, Greece and Rom, it was persecuted after its clergy, as at Nisibis in 338, took an active part in the defense of Byzantine territory against Shapur II, and the Christians in Persia revealed their natural hopes for a Byzantine victory. In 341 Shapur ordered the massacre of all Christians in his empire, entirevillages of Christians were being slaughtered when he restricted the proscriptions to priests, monks and nuns: even so 16,000 Christians died in a persecution that lasted till Shapur`s death (379). Yezdegird I (399-420) restored religious freedom to the Christians, and helped them rebuild their churches. In 422 a council of Persian bishops made the Persian Christian Church independent of both Greek and Roman Christianity." So, what have we? Is this mere persecution for the hell of it...as Jassim would claim? Persia and the Roman Empires fought bloody battles for decades and more...if Christians, ANY Christians, helped the enemy of Persia...what would you expect the reaction to be? ...Also the persecution was toned down and then it was reversed by the next king. In other words, persecuting Christians was NOT the norm for Persians...it`s tragic that this religion had ensnared Assyrians...but how could it be otherwise? ..are you sure we wuz "saved" by Jesus? Also...you`ll notice that as fast as they could Persian Christians separated themselves from the Christian enemies of Persia, the land they called home...a wise move but ultimately futile as them damn Christians never WOULD stop attacking those countries...the Christians of the Mideast were doomed and are to this day, not because of any inbred hatred of Muslims towards them...History, and not Aprim`s Hysteria, shows that clearly enough...they were doomed rather because of the actions of foreign Christians. If it was "natural" enough that the Persian Christians would wish for and work for a Byzantine victory (even though the damn fools would have been persecuted as badly by the Byzantines for being heretics), it is equally natural that the Persians would forever distrust their Christians from that day forward...same as the Turks and Iraqis came to mistrust them and for the same reason; this HOPE they have that foreigners will kick the shit out of their own countrymen. --------------------- |
