...what you say is true...but it's also true that we should throw these offensive words back in the teeth of those who sent them...turn what they thought would be a term of derision and shame into a badge of courage. The word nigger presents the same dilemna...there's nothing the good people would like better than to forget, or get us to forget, that there was ever a time in America when nigger was coined by whites to dehumanize the objects of their hatred and fear...wipe it all away...never happened. The once-time comedian Dick Gregory titled his first book, "Nigger" for his mother...so whenever she heard that word again she'd know people were advertising for her son't book. It not only takes some of the hurt out of it but keeps the historical reality alive...so that people don't forget. It's like taking back the word....turning it around and using it against those who thought to use it as an insult...but perhaps it isn't for me, a straight, if bent, white man to use the terms...but I did enjoy it when the group Queer Nation came into being...after all, isn't it "queer" to say that homosexuals are deviant? --------------------- |
