...in a lengthy re-explanation of why the world must really be flat, over at beth....comes this... In July of 1933, about 800 men left their families in Iraq for Syria, believing that the French would provide the land the Iraqis and the British had failed to provide. They planned to send for their families once they were settled. They crossed into Syria on July 22, but the French ordered them to return to Iraq. When they crossed back into Iraq, they clashed with detachments of the Iraqi Army. Many were killed; about 500 returned to Syria, where French authorities arrested them. The French eventually allowed these Assyrians to live in Khabur, where they became self-sufficient agricultural community. The following month, on August 11, 1933, Iraqis massacred the Assyrians ofSemele. Perhaps 1500 Assyrians, mostly women and children, survived. These the government of Iraq sent to a camp in Mosul. ...what this article doesn`t say is that these men were ARMED and crossed borders illegally...of course they were arrested....try crossing into Canada from the United States illegally, with 799 armed and see what happens to you. Why does it come as such a shock to these people that governments recat in these ways? ...They were later allowed to return to Iraq but only on condition they lay down their guns...they refused and tried to enter anyway...what did they expect? Tell us which government of which country would allow an armed band of 800 men to cross and recross its borders at their whim? ...were things unsettled in the region at the time? Yes. But why? Had the Allies just finished a war for oil? Had they carved out new "countries" with an eye to oil fields? Had the Brits found Christian refugees taken in by Iraq, to wear British uniforms and accept Britiah pay to FIGHT fellow Iraqis or not? Under these pre-conditions, all of them brought to the region by yet another Christian Crusade, is it any wonder Iraq`s government was concerned to the point of paranoia...even to attacking a civilian population when the "men" were gone? ...haven`t the United States and Britain been attacking civilians in Iraq for over 16 years? Haven`t they murdered women and children? ...how stupid do you have to be? --------------------- |
