...the Jews, much to their credit, have kept faith with that monstrous god of theirs all these centuries and millenia. The best thing that ever happened to the Hebrews was getting thrown out of Jerusalem..that forced them to leave that abbatoir of a Temple where the blood of innocent animals was spilled in order to gain favor with THAT Hottentot of a "god". Once sent wandering away from their Temple they were unable to kill animals and offer them as sacrifices any longer and instead turned to crossing their eyes over their Talmud and what not...it was an improvement because at least they had to learn to read and discuss things...okay, if you started out as far back as THOSE people did...NOT killing animals "for god" and reading instead would be a BIG improvement. Regardless, they modified their god`s needs somewhat...note; Like I said MAN created and then modified his gods...instead of shedding blood for him they disputed over him and what he wanted of them. The point is they remained FAITHFUL...they grew a little more sophisticated and a lot less bloody and they took their god WITH them...but he was STILL yahwe to them...the Old Testicles was STILL their word of god...they didn`t dump him for Ashur or anyone else...they remained FAITHFUL. Imagine a Jew giving up on yahwe and telling other Jews, in all seriousness, that he`s MORE of a Jew for it. Clearly that could never happen. I mean how different is it, how far do you have to move away from yahwe to Jesus? Jesus was a JEW..he was OF that religion...yahwe was HIS god as well...he came to FULFILL the Mosaic Code..the Mosaic Code was a HEBREW code...Moses was a JEW after all. Yet, if a Jew moved ever so slightly away from yahwe and over to Jesus...he was driven OUT of the religion. No Jew ever said, "well you know, Jesus really is a Jew after all...so what is the real difference"? hell no. The Old Testicles is a holy book to both Jews and Hebrews...so how much MORE alike can they be? All the New Testicles is is an up-close look at ONE of the many crimes of yahwe...yet even though they share the SAME Old Testicle...a Jew and a Christian are VERY different things...ask them. Don tells us Ashur and Jesus were "very close"...so, "where`s the big deal". But Jesus is even CLOSER to yahwe...yet to any Jew there is a BIG DEAL in believing Jesus is the promised Messiah...in fact, believing that he is gets you KICKED OUT...you have to go over to a whole new ritual and belief system..and the difference is SO serious that you can get KILLED over it and so can your children and your parents. You can`t claim you kept faith with your wife because your mistress is REAL CLOSE to her and even has the SAME NAME, "almost"...and likes all the same things as your wife so, "where`s the big deal"? How come you can quit Ashur...or change his name...or put a different robe on him and claim you are still an ASSYRIAN? Jesus was said to be the promised Messiah....except most Jews didn`t accept him and still don`t. There were other "false" Messiahs before Jesus and several after...and the Jews refused to accept them either....can you see a tendency to KEEP FAITH in the Jews? They refused to run after every false claimant..and to the Jews, Jesus was just another pretender...then why on EARTH would ASSYRIANS accept him as a Messiah? And...more to the point...where in all of Assyrian religion and history was there EVER a call for a heavenly Messiah who would come and do for Assyrians what they could NOT do for themselves? Assyrians became dispirited after the fall of their empire...they were more susceptible to losing faith in a god who seemed to abandon them than were the Hebrews...who were the MOST abandoned and "lost" people the world ever knew...and who compensated for their woeful inadequacies by claiming their god loved them MOST when he abused them MOST...that he was "testing" them constantly. They carried this to pathological ends, but that was understandable..otherwise they would have had to conclude that they NEVER had a god interested in them in the slightest. The remnants of the pagan Assyrians may have flirted with Christianity, once they too became dispirited enough to believe they were godless, bereft of heavenly guidance, so what the hell. It would have been Islam and the sight of the Arab army that may have awakened long lost memories of a day when Assyrian warriors travelled far and wide. Surely the mess of bishops cracking each other`s skulls over Jewish rituals...a constant bending of the knees and supplication of a foreign religion that demanded humility and dust grovelling could not have been pleasant for Assyrians...that sort of thing GREW UP with the Hebrews..it was NEVER a part of the Assyrian experience. Ashur lost his hold over his people...Christ gave them "hope" of better times after death...which was ALL the Hebrews EVER had to look forward to! But Muhammad and the Arabs brought hope and possibility back...once again there was need and scope for hygiene, for aqueducts and plumbing and magnificent buildings..once again pride and strength and ACTIVE exuberance were called into play..once again there was a civilization to build..ambassadors were needed, politicians, generals, soldiers, planners and engineers...Islam held out the possibility that the glorious Assyrian past and focus on building great cities and powerful governments and cultural institutions still had a role to play on earth... Ashur is still here. Ashur never went away. You just have to believe in Ashur...as Don says Jesus has meaning for him and therefore is "alive" for Don...is a real presence...I don`t feel that way about Jesus...or any other god BUT Ashur...and so for me, Ashur exists. It`s simple, really....all you need do is have faith in the god of the Assyrians...and there Ashur is. --------------------- |
