...there I am walking down the coblestone street in this small coastal village in sunny Mexico when someone calls out my name...turns out to be one of the police, the ONLY bi-lingual one, who was involved in the mess with Chance Reynolds back in San Miguel. I recognized him imediately...not many bi-lingual cops out in the countryside.

We shook hands and reminised a bit. I remember well the last time I saw him...thereŽd been another confrontation between my ranch and the place Chance was staying at...This was right after IŽd run him and his horse over with my truck, unfortunately only killing the horse. His arm was still in a sling and he was bruised and limping...but trying to look the tough cowboy, as ever. His two-bit wife was there was well, also the American couple who were his next mark...they and a few others heŽd convinced that he was Robin Hood and Zoro all rolled into one...just like heŽd suckered me.

After I ran him over he, his family and then, a few days later, the two couples on either side of us who were aiding and abetting him ran off to town to hide out...I wonŽt say how, but they decided it was safer for THEM to be gone from there.

They were still driving out each day, en masse, to care for the horses they left behind...I fixed that by tearing down their fence with the same truck...GM would be proud. That got rid of their reason to come out there...and by that point thatŽs all I wanted...I figured if the US Marshalls and Interpol AND the Mexican FBI...a truly scary bunch of night riders, didnŽt want him badly enough...IŽd get rid of him myself...before they got me jailed or lynched through all the lies they were swearing to.

Those few times they came out there I made a point of riding a horse over to their house...just to lope around and be a painfull reminder...they STILL couldnŽt figure out how I manged to stay out of jail...they refused to believe the US Marshalls AND the American Consul were in touch with each other and the local District Attorney who were ALL waiting for Interpol to come get the skunk and put him back in federal prison.

TheyŽd taken to calling the police whenever I rode out and it got so silly that a truck with cops would show up and stand guard at their gate...automatic rifles at the ready...watching me as I rode back and forth and sang old cowboy songs at the top of my lungs...the only way to have scared them off was to convince them I was crazy AND able to remain free...

The last time they came out...we somehow got into a confrontation on the road as they were leaving...I was on my horse...they were in a truck, about four of them by the time the cops finally showed up. This bi-lingual cop surprised us all by speaking very good English. He took me aside and said he knew what was going on but would I please stay away from them so thereŽd be no trouble until the officials came from Mexico City. They were hollering about how I was from Iraq...was a terrorist...look at how I ran a horse and rider over etc.

Nothing much happened...I rode back to our place and they ran to town...I donŽt think they returned after that...they moved the horses...my horses.

Anyway...small world. The guy retired from the police in San Miguel and has openned a business near to this town...during our talk he reassured me in a round about way that I didnŽt have to worry...he wasnŽt going to fink on me...IŽm still wanted in San Miguel...but itŽs my own doing...the judge finally decided that all 13 of the false charges they brought against me were lies and tosed them out...but they got me on running the guy over because I addmitted doing it. But even with that against me, the judge reduced the charge to a "fight" betwen us...a fight in which I used a three ton glove to punch him out with. Instead of jail time they fined me...but I wasnŽt going to pay. Besides which they have twice the amount of the fine in their safe as a bond I posted...they can keep it.

Mexico is so reasonable...unless youŽre wanted for murder...you can stay away from the state you committed your srime in for three years...after that your warrant is thrown away and youŽre free to come back...no hard feelings.
Besides, the cops and judges were all on my side..or rather, they didnŽt care for this gringo crook whoŽd taken the alias of Lew Garcia...to kiss their ases a bit. I became pals with the cops who arrested me....apologetically and the comandante of the prison where I had to spend a night seemed pleased that IŽd run a gringo over. He walked me out the gates and shook hands warmly. Nice guy, but I wouldnŽt have wanted to be on the wrong side of him.

That was just when the United States attacked Iraq under this Shrub...and it did my heart good to run over an American. I think the Mexicans felt the same way.
