...so, I pulls in to a town here, I won`t mention, with my ancient Volkswagon Bug spewing oil from every orifice. I bought it to have a safe getaway car that had Mexican plates...you never know. I see a lovely and huge old mansion in the middle of the historical district that has been lovingly turned into a bed and breakfast with tremendous tall ceilings, thick quiet stone walls...various alleyways and back patios with fountains with a huge parking area that has thirty foot stone walls round it....with 16 foot iron doors. The place is silent, serene, tranquil and clean...the thick walls keep out all street noises so you`d swear there was no one around for miles.

I rent a room for the price of a Howard Johnson`s dump hotel and step back into Colonial times. The staff even rush to place cardboard under the flowing engine so I don`t spoil the huge flagstones in the courtyard where the carriages and horses used to be kept...all the time assuring me that there is no problem whatsoever.

After settling in I make my way to the reception desk and ask the fellow in charge if he can recommend any mechanics who know their Volkswagons...he immediately calls over the bell captain and together they deicde on one...and show it to me on a street map they hand me...complete with telephone and address.

After a shower I take a taxi to the mechanic`s place and explain my problem...to the boss that is. He immediately hops in the cab with me and we drive back to my hotel where he gets under and all over my engine and says it`s nothing serious...just a bad job of packing the seals plus it`s spouting gas from the gasline...he agrees to drive the car back to his shop where he will take the engine completely out and fix it...put it back and, if I want...drive it back to me...all in the space of three hours.

I am happy as can be but insist I will come for the car myself...some things are TOO much. Three hours later there`s the car, looking very apologetic and purring smoothly...no oil leaks.

Oh...and the cost? Fifty bucks...for all of it.
