...rereading one of my favorite books, "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" by T.E. Lawrence about his years spent fighting with the Arabs as Britain's go between and unofficial liar, I'm struck by how often Lawrence agonizes about his duplicity...he knew about the Sykes-Picoy Treaty long before the Arabs suspected and though he laments the loss of his honor and integrity by leading good men on to their deaths for what he knew was a lie, at LEAST he knew he was acting the scoundrel's part...but, as he says time and again, it was a price they were all willing to pay to save England. In other words they USED the desire for independence and national pride, which THEY instilled in the Arabs in the first place, to further their own ends with no intention of making good on the vast majority of promises they made when they HAD to make the promises in order to get the Arabs to do as they wished them to.

One reknowned sheik came to Lawrence clutching a handfull of conflicting letters bearing just such promises. Which promise should I believe, he asked Lawrence in bewilderment....the last one by date...said Lawrence. There's honesty for you.

I can't help but think of Agha Potrous and the sincere fools who followed him in believing British promises...it SAYS in black and white the Brits used dummies to achieve their own ends knowing all along they would do nothing for them...what more did boys need this time around...
