5:30 A.M. and I’ve been writing for an hour about chapter two when it struck me that I was writing a second book about Dr Joseph’s book…and that wasn’t what I wanted to be doing.

His own book is book enough…anyone interested can do what I did…read it.

Dr Joseph’s book cleared away cobwebs, it provided the missing key to understanding better just what afflicts this community so…what makes it almost incapable of aiming straight…what makes it seem, from a distance, a collection of clowns, each of whom is more foolish and pretentious than his fellow.

Instead of going over the same territory as Dr Joseph covers so well I prefer to take the light he’s placed in my hand and shine it around the nook and crannies of modern Assyria and see what I see.

For one thing the glaring question arises as to what Christian, in his right mind…after Christianity got done with it…a Christian who devoutly believes that accumulation of barbarous silliness called the Holy Bible would ever, and I mean ever, WANT to be associated in any way, let alone lineally, with the ancient Assyrians? It’s like a choirboy wanting to be a part of the Correleone crime family, looking for the “good” in Don Correleone, who also did some “good things”, but who’s a criminal all the same. I mean, what’s there to gain by such an association? Especially when this particular Famiglia has lost all its power and glory?

Also, what exactly does a Christian today find worthy in being a modern Assyrian? Have we misunderstood people like Ken Joseph and others who tell us that Christianity “saved” us and can “save” us some more? How can you rationally explain those few Christians left hanging on by their fingernails to Iraq as having been “saved”? Unless it’s an entirely different meaning of that word….that rather than meaning actual physical salvation, as the Nestorians thought the European missionaries were offering through the backing of their powerful home nations…they meant “save” as in Jesus SAVES…that wicked and evil people, and who more than the ancient Assyrians and their “damned” offspring, could be forgiven by bathing in the blood of Jesus…accepting him as their SAVIOUR…they didn’t mean, “we will save you from Muslim oppression”…which their meddling made worse...they meant , we will save you from YOURSELVES…from your filthy roots, which they even “discovered” for us…and also from this heretical sect you’ve been following all these centuries…we will also “save” you from the errors of the Catholic faith…from Orthodoxy and its manifold sins and wrongnessess…etc. The missionaries as well as the church never once meant, “we will save your children from physical harm”…which is what we thought they meant, because it was uppermost in our minds…they meant we will save your souls, screw your bodies, for everlasting bliss…after we get you killed.

The splicing together of pious Christians, who are nothing more than neo-Jews…an offshoot of the old Hebrews, who hated the Assyrians and Babylonians for making them bathe and change their clothes…with “Assyrians”, is like chaining a Black man and a White man together in the deep South during the 1920s…it would be a most uncomfortable pairing. Though both of them are professed Christians, by then…their attitudes towards each other and the treatment of the one by other as well as the loathing passing both ways makes their mutual “faith” meaningless…so damn distant and part are they…and determined to remain so.

This could explain why Assyrian “pride” as shown in festivals and parades where cardboard and plywood “chariots” are drawn by hairy men in flimsy skirts decked out with tassles from old curtains, pulling a “queen” dressed in all the finery Woolworths can supply, on sale. There is nothing more humiliating than the sort of pride Assyrians show for their “ancestors”…down to gelding the Lamasu, in case anyone missed the point.
