ROOTERS: Metro police in Skokie last night were called out to a disturbance at 1765 Tribal Lane. When they arrived they saw an elderly woman down on the ground with a man astride beating her over the head with what proved to be a rolling pin. As officers approached an elderly man, later known to be the woman`s husband, came hobbling up. The man told police that he and his wife were canvassing the neighborhood, once part of the native Illinois tribal lands, asking residents for possible compensation for living on their indigenous lands. The man, Chief Redbird, said the man assailing his wife had seemed cooperative at first and suggested the he continue knocking on doors down the block while he discussed their claims with the wife.

Apparently as soon as the husband was gone, the man, an Assyrian named Peter BetBasoon, retrieved the rolling pin from his kitchen and began pummeling the old woman. Her cries brought the husband back just as police units arrived.

Officers took Mr. BetBasson into custody and he was later charged with two counts aggravated assault on an elderly person plus battery and general mayhem, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace. Mr. BetBassoon is a computer technician and dean of AINA University. He also serves as president of the "Indigenous People`s Rights Committee of Assyria", a group dedicated to regaining their indigenous lands in Iraq.

As police led Mr BetBassoon away in handcuffs he shouted, "no damn Indian is getting my home". The woman was taken to a nearby hopital for treatment and later released. Arraignment is set for later in the week.
