One of the peculiar things about Dr Joseph and our community is that he’s the only one we’ve produced whose attained that level of success in his field….actually, unless I’m mistaken, he’s the only one of us who ever earned an advanced degree in our modern history…which is decidedly NOT Assyriology and certainly not anthropology but the history of the modern Middle East. As an accredited historian and professor and author, Dr Joseph could not have simply read Syriac manuscripts to get where he is, or read books by missionaries, or confined himself to the few books written by our own people…or been content with stories told to him by his grandmother. That’s all fine for Aprim, Rosie and Jumblat…the Three Stooges of Assyria…but it won’t do for an historian who has to study ALL the source material about ALL the people of the MidEast…and do it in an academic setting among respected scholars who guide and critique and certify along the way…the same way our doctors can’t read medical texts in their basements and declare themselves experts in surgery…you have to STUDY these things under the guidance of people who know a lot more than you think you do.

It is, of course, a testament to our stupidity and mendacity too that we heap sarcasm on Dr Joseph. It isn’t surprising though. Just picture any community of red-neck white Racists in the South confronted with scholarly textbooks and articles on the African-American experience and you’ll understand where we come from.

Our intellectuals, when you find any, stick to the sciences,,,,medicine, engineering, accounting, that sort of thing because in these fields one plus one will always equal two. There’s no room for speculative thinking…or imaginative thinking…not at least where the Humanities and the Human story is concerned. They are all safe and neutral territory…but not history. Definitely not history. Because in order to qualify as an historian and to teach college level classes…and publish real books, you have to study your subject thoroughly, under guidance and not as you choose…discarding or avoiding whatever doesn’t fit your preconceived notions.

The only way we’ve found to deal with what should be a feather in our cap, I mean in producing a Dr Joseph, is to claim he is a traitor paid for and working for the Jews and the CIA, who need him to “deny Assyrian identity”. And we seriously believe this! But what’s interesting is that he’s still the only one. Why is that?

Wouldn’t it be odd if, out of 80,000 or 120,000 Assyrians we managed to produce only one doctor….or one engineer only? Especially if there were no barriers keeping others from entering medical school or engineering school….wouldn’t it be strange that only one from among us chose these fields? So, why only one legitimate historian?

What would we say if we had only one legitimate doctor among 10,000 witch doctors all insisting that THEY know true medicine while our one graduate of Johns Hopkins is called by them a “fake” and a “charlatan” and a “quack”…a “fool”…a “traitor” who wants nothing more than to deny our greatness….by becoming the single and only true doctor among us, accredited and certified by all those who turn out doctors for everyone else…pretty weird no?

Why only one historian out of so many Hottentots?
