In the book titled “Infidels” by Andrew Wheatcroft, published by Random House, 2005…the author discusses points at which Islam and Christianity confronted each other…Spain, the Mediterranean, the Balkans etc. Wheatcroft is the author of several real books, published by real publishers…on their dime, not his. He is director of the international postgraduate “Centre for Publishing Studies” at the University of Stirling in Scotland. I realize he isn’t an Aprim or Rosie-Malek and therefore a “stupid-enemy-so-called-expert”, but what can I do about it?

On page 231 he has this to say …

“In 1797 Napoleon ordered his commander in the Ionian Islands to ‘flatter the inhabitants…and to speak of the Greece of Athens and Sparta in the various proclamations that you will issue.’ The identification of the people of Greece with the civilization of ancient Hellas was common among educated circles in many western European countries, but especially so in France, Britain, and many of the German-speaking states. It was a connection actively fostered by what has been fairly called the “Greek intelligentsia”…most expatriate Greeks living outside the Ottoman dominions…Revolutionary France had an important lesson for these Balkan protoliberators. There could be no limits to the pursuit of liberty. No sacrifice was too great if it led, ultimately, to the nation.”

Sound familiar?

By the time of the great missionary movement among the Nestorians of the 1840s (a time corresponding to the discoveries of Nineveh etc.) America had joined with Britain, France and Germany in efforts to “save” the Christians of the Ottoman empire and Persia too. In trying to reawaken their evangelical zeal, in order to send them among the Muslims, they flattered them by calling them the descendants of , not only, the great Apostolic Church and tradition but also of the ancient Assyrians. This was echoed and reinforced by our own “intelligentsia”…such as it is. Their goal too was to get freedom with “no limits to the pursuit of liberty”. Only the “liberty” they were used for was not their own but Great Britain’s…and, of course, “No sacrifice was too great if it led ultimately to the nation”. Guess which nation they were referring to? Yep, you guessed it; while we thought we were sacrificing for our own nation, we were really being sacrificed for THEIR nation.

In the case of the missionaries and earliest explorers (after all, Layard became a diplomat in the region) who were all working for their own causes, nations and agendas….their interest in flattering us as direct Assyrians etc was not in order to get us to liberate “Assyria”…as we misread their efforts. Rather they wanted us to liberate MUSLIMS from Islam…and, as far as Layard and other diplomats were concerned, provide the excuse needed to occupy the lands and keep the Russians out…eventually attacking the Ottomans directly. Their aim was to save the road to India…to keep the Russians from annexing vital territory. In other words; they used us for the benefit of THEIR empire, as the missionaries used us for the empire of THEIR Jesus.

Either way we were used…by missionaries in order to do their work in harassing Muslims, perhaps forcing retribution which could then be used by diplomats as the pretext to invade…or gain concessions NOT to invade…and the diplomats used us as the entryway and police force.

For both these goals to be achieved, it was necessary to flatter us…flatter us by telling us we were the great Assyrians of old so maybe we’d be less afraid to go evangelize the Muslims…and, of course, that we had this long noble history as an apostolic church…either way they used us and we’ve been paying ever since.

And there are still those among us who continue fooling themselves…and, not surprisingly, they do it while living in those very same western Christian nations, plus Australia, who first used us to attack BetNahrain for their benefit, not ours…. and still are.
