..like I just called assyrian nationalism "stupid". You have to show how and why it's stupid.

The stupidest thing about assyrian nationalism is that it tries to cast itself as a second case of a people sent into a "Exile" or "diaspora" who can reclaim their "lost homeland" and all gather back there from the ends of the earth. I mean of course seeing ourselves as a second Jewish people who eventually got "their" land back...and so might we.

Shlomo Sand, in his book "The Invention of the Jewish People" puts that myth to rest by showing that there never was any evidence for a great exile from Judea/Palestine...the Jews were not sent out to wander the earth and that, incidentally, is how they supposedly all wound up in Eastern Europe. He brings evidence that this was the view held by all Israeli scholars as well, except that Zionist myth-making required them to keep silent and pretend an exile actually took place.

Likewise assyrians were never sent into exile, by anybody. We left for economic reasons mostly. Any European Jew, at any time, could have moved back to his Holy Land....they could have left from London and Paris and Rome and Berlin and Vienna and Warsaw any time they wished...only they never did (until pogroms and then Hitler)....which proves there was no overwhelming desire, centuries old, or longing to go "back home". The movement of Euro Jews only started when Christians tried to murder them all and so they felt it was a good time to take a hint and leave...but the United States was their preferred choice, only they weren't allowed...and Iraqi Jews were more than happy to stay in Baghdad, never to see Jerusalem, had not Zionists terrorized them into moving, because they needed more bodies in Israel AND to prove Jews really did want to and HAVE to huddle together on a farm in Haifa rather than stay where they had been for hundreds of very happy and productive years.

Our model is all wrong...it either never happened or, the modern end of it, happened for very different reasons than apply to us. assyrians suffered no more nor no less than Protestants did at the hands of Catholics, and vice versa, in Europe. And when we left it was to go to a much better, at least more developed, place where there was far more economic opportunity for us and our families. The Jews who moved to the Holy Land did so only after they lost everything and were left with only their lives...we moved in order to GET everything...everything material of value, that is. Jews would never have left Vienna and Berlin and Paris if they had not been forced out, while we, we were never forced out but went looking for better opportunity.

This business about returning to Iraq, to "assyria", is all talk and silly talk at that...sure, we'd like to take safe vacations there and maybe invest, but none of our children are going to stand for being taken back for good, if even for a week...and their mothers certainly don;t want them to move back to a country blown back to the Dark Ages....and why should we? Where's the compelling reason to leave Los Angeles for Kirkuk? Who, if he or she were actually settled and succeeding in America or Europe, would go back to Iraq? especially the Iraq we just finished destroying...I would have gone back to Saddam's Iraq (as many did), but not the Iraq of Paul Wolfowitz and Cheney and Bush and their stooges.

This is why assyrian nationalism is stupid; because there is no good reason for it and the reasons given do not apply to Christians but did to Jews, who were only driven "back home" by murderous Christians. I realize we like to say that we too were driven out by murderous others, in our case, Muslims....but history just doesn't bear us out...(we're still waiting on Bet-Solomon)

assyrians the world over have no compelling reason to go back "home"...even if they DID come from there. They are happy and doing well and their children, especially have no desire or need to go back to what is now Qurdistan or the depleted uranium playing fields of Baghdad...just as Jews had no desire to return to Haifa till they were forced by Christian brutality...there was NO Jewish country anywhere in the world they could go to....not a one. That is not the case with assyrians who have a host of Christian, advanced, nations eager to welcome them...where's the compelling reason? Where's the next Holocaust, against Christian/assyrians IN a Christian land, that would drive them back to Baghdad? There isn't one and if there hadn't been one against Jews, they never would have gone to Palestine either.

And if, as we claim, the MidEast with its numerous Muslim nations, all of which would be surrounding a small, land-locked assyria they could choke off at any time, a people we say have been persecuting and murdering us for centuries...why on earth would we want to go BACK and live surrounded by them? To believe this is to believe that the Jews whose position we try to emulate, would leave the safety of any non-Christian state to go BACK to Germany at the time when Germans were still actively persecuting Jews, as we claim Muslims are right now persecuting us.

So the very model assyrians think they are emulating, never happened...not only that but the conditions are totally different with Jews having nowhere to go and assyrians having EVERYWHERE, worthwhile and safe, to go...surrounded by their fellow-religionists...something the Jew had not, anywhere. So, whom are we kidding...I mean besides ourselves?
