Similar polls in Eastern European countries are showing that large numbers and in some cases the majority say life was better under communism. The Soviet Union made some mistakes but one can't deny the many great things they also did. They had no unemployment rates, free education, health care(for all of the 350 millions people) and many more things. We used to go to East Berlin to buy stuff because it was so much cheaper. You could get a 24 pack of Coke for something like 3 marks at the time while we paid 16 marks in the west. You could get a whole carton of cigarettes for 10 marks when we paid 50 or more. And the East Germans didn't look as horrible as we were told and they seemed well fed and dressed. I went to the former east side in 1999 when I was visiting and more have moved from the west to east than the other way around.

Thanks for the article. Blum is another champ.
