hehe that's a good and funny comparison. i know peoples like that who kive in some village yet brag of their uncle in the west. and yes, being born in a land is not proof. simon parpola is an assyriologist yet puts his nose elsewhere. he knows about the ancients and then uses what his aunt told him to draw a connection between the two. a lot happens over centuries, and heck, you just mentioned how barely 150 years ago the mar shimon was admittint that they were of jewish origin. today things are different since the rise of nationalism. i was reading a book on the ottoman empire and it mentioned various xtian denominations and there was no "assyrian church" but yhere was "syrian" armenian etc. it mentioned that problems arouse for the turks when nationalism spread to the xtians in the empire, hence, that includes nestorians as well. they were later named assyrians, they started making demands and even went to war against the ottoman empire. a lot happens in just a century and imagine over 2000 years.
