I've been listening to a number of talks from the 1960s and early '70s by Herbert Marcuse on YouTube, and in each of them Marcuse reiterates that the working class (the base) is not the revolutionary agent like that of the 19th century or the 1930s working class. The revolutionary agents of the '60s and '70s, according to Marcuse, were the New Left intelligentsia and the Black and Brown urban masses. But without the wider white working class base, there would be no possibility of great change (revolution) or lesser change (reform). Today's working class are the white supporters of Trump, and they have --or are in the process of forming-- a revolutionary ideology and vanguard: White Supremacy and neo-Nazism, whose ranks are filled with the children and grandchildren of the "Silent Majority" and the "Southern Strategy", who have almost taken oath to fight progressives, social-democrats and socialists to the last man standing.
