...too painful to watch...if my times comes the same way I hope I'm alive enough not to make my last days a misery of useless treatment...I know two people who declined therapy and spent their last days fully aware and vital to the end, with the help of opiates the last days...a far more dignified way to go.

Too bad Hitchens didn't see the totalitarianism of Western Civilization...I know he took great satisfaction in all the accomplishments of his Western culture and excused its worst depredations as the price-one-must-pay...but then he wasn't the one paying it. It's a bit like a rapist telling you to calm down because he's written some excellent poetry and after he's done with you, and you've showered, you can gain whatever comfort from his noble words you can....no thanks...I'll skip the rape AND the poems.

The insistence that Muslims were fighting back only because Islam told them to, no matter what, was myopic and just plain false...he also tried to blame Islam and Muhammad for the reaction Arabs and others had to the way they were being treated...did he also think, or want to imply, that if not for Islam the Arab world would have accepted all that his culture dished out? very sloppy thinking that.
