"They only condemn killing when the person doing it is not on their side. For example the Kurds, every American has heard of them and Saddam Hussein. But the same folks who heard of them never mention or perhaps are not even aware that there are many millions more Kurds in Turkey and have been killed by the many thousands. For every Kurd that Saddam has killed, the Turks have killed a thousands. They're not even allowed to speak their language yet in Iraq they have their own universities but we still hear about the "poor" Kurds. It is only condemned when it's an enemy doing the killing. Many governments kill their own people and the US backs them and gives them money. Syria isn't doing anything unusual except defending itself, the same way Americans claim to be defending themselves."

-- In the '90s when I was a student and worked at a newspaper stand, I remember reading Christopher Hitchens' weekly article for the Nation magazine under the title, Minority Report. He was always advocating on behalf of the Qurds, especially during the '90s when about 20,000 Qurds were killed due to Turkish policies much worse than al Anfal. The Turkish fascist terror group, the Grey Wolves, took part in assassinating Qurdish leaders and political activists, while Turkish regulars and paramilitary groups wages a "Scorched Earth" policy with American weaponry, much like another U.S. ally, Guatemala under Rios Montt, did to the Maya Indians in the early '80s, massacring 200,000. While all of this was going on, the U.S., the E.U. and NATO (of which Turkey is a member state) were preparing to tear asunder the former Yugoslavia in what transpired into a 78-day bombing that Balkanised the socialist federation into a few, weak client states. What Guatemala and the Qurds had in common was that their murderers were allies of the West who were fighting the "Red Menace" which they claimed was creeping up on them through the left-wing guerillas of Guatemala or the communist PKK of the Qurds. The "Scorched Earth" may have originated in Vietnam and chosen by Rios Montt and his supporters due to the similarites the jungles and mountains of the Guatemala share with those of Vietnam. But yeah, most people don't know about Guatemala, Southeastern Anatolia and barely anything about the former Yugoslavia... but they know Saddam "gassed the Qurds."
