I had a cousin, in Baghdad...a brilliant young woman...graduated as a nurse in a family full of doctors...she fell in love with a medical student, a Muslim. They were terribly in love but you know how that goes...it would have killed her mother (her father had already died) if she'd married him...so she killed herself instead, at 21....with a rubber hose and a gas heater...she left behind a note which her mother said was so beautiful, so eloquent and well-reasoned that she could understand why her daughter killed herself...I wonder if she understood how much a part she played in her daughter's suicide....

I wonder if the mother was happier with a dead daughter than with one married to a Muslim.

Odd thing is that when the brother and sisters and mother all came to the US, the eldest daughter, a cardiologist, married a Muslim doctor, in Chicago...the mother survived just fine.
