..it's fashionable to slam Freud these days....my father was a psychiatrist...I have a cousin who is a psychiatrist and is married to a psychiatrist....so, I'm surrounded. What got to me about my two cousins is that they were part of the new wave in psychiatry that espoused rugs and the idea of chemical imbalances being responsible for aberrant behavior and I guess all behavior...how handy. It isn't the society or your screwy upbringing, just a little too much of one chemical and not enough of another...so here's a pill...who needs all that re-living your childhood crap.

Before Freud, writers and artist filled the space...literature explored and delved into the unconscious and all that good stuff...it was a big mistake making doctors, men of "science" the ones given this terrible power...it should have remained with artists and writers and thinkers...not medical tinkerers.

Freud was gutsy enough to explore things no one else in that society dared question...and it's fascinating to realize that what he stumbled upon is his childhood sexual urges was a widespread sickness of sexual perversity, child molestation and worse in upper crust Christian society....girls didn't have Electra complexes...their Daddies WERE screwing them! It wasn't their "wish fulfillment" when they reported these things. Same with boys, their hatred of their fathers had nothing to do with a desire to set father aside and sleep with Mom, they wanted daddy to stop screwing THEM!

It was all too much for Freud, who was molested himself as a child...too much to admit to what was actually going on...but the man LOOKED and he dared the wrath of that twisted society....and he was right more often than he was wrong.

Sounds like a good read.
