I told my children about religion, as a historical fact, just as I told her about people believing the earth was flat....once. I said that it was an understandable part of our infancy, when we were superstitious and eager to find explanations for things which puzzled us...and religion sort of explained things...but in ways not conducive to the growth and expansion of the human mind eventually...and then I told her not to steal from people because it was wrong...I asked her to imagine how she would feel if someone stole from her, and keep that in mind...I also said thieves are weak in character, unless they steal from the wealthy, in which case they can wear green clothes and camp out. She got the message.

I didn't tell her not to steal because Jesus would be sad...but that the person she stole from would be sad..and so would she if someone stole from her.

Only once did one of my kids steal....at four my youngest walked out of the library with a video he wanted...he thought that was all you had to do, choose one and walk out. But that was hardly the beginning of a career in crime which required tales of human sacrifice and burning in hell.

Some parents quiet their children by telling them the police will come, or a doctor will be called to administer a shot if they continue crying....or that God will send them to hell. All are in the same category of short-cuts for lazy people OR those who wish to control large numbers of people the easiest and most efficient way....but it's a scam all the way...doesn't matter that it "works" some of the time...it's still disgraceful and unbefitting the human mind, which is a precious thing deserving of respect, kind treatment and growth opportunities.
