...you can make any claim you like among your friends and co-workers....you can say you're an Apache....or Cherokee. Who cares? Who's going to argue with you? Of course people will listen politely because they assume you wouldn't lie about such a thing...after all, you can't be THAT needy and filled with feelings of inferiority that you have to invent a noble ancestry for yourself.

But...if you show up a tribal council meeting, with a feather in your head and speaking Apache or Navajo, they won't give you a share of their government petroleum checks...or casino winnings or any other tribal deal with the federal government.

This isn't friendly banter around the water cooler...you're now committing serious fraud...they will tell you that anyone can stick a feather in his head...or learn a language....or carry a tomahawk...these things ANYONE can do....if you want a share of the tribe's money, or anything else, you WILL need proof, period!

Our boys (even those very educated who should know better) love to say, "No one asks a Greek to prove he is Greek...or a Frenchman to prove who he is, why should we...how come they ask US"? Yes, you DO have to prove your nationality and identity, where it COUNTS! Try getting into the United States by saying you speak English and wear a Yankees baseball cap.....the officials will tell you that ANYONE can do that....and it won;t count either if you take a picture standing on top of the Statue of Liberty WITH the Constitution in your hand...that will merely get you arrested.

People most definitely have to prove who they are WHERE IT MATTERS!
